Sparkling Water at Home: Easy Flavor Ideas Without the Sugar

Plain sparkling water is refreshing, but after a while it can feel like a chore to drink. A few simple additions make it interesting again, with no syrups and nothing complicated.

Start with what is in the fridge

A slice of lemon or lime is the classic, but cucumber, orange, grapefruit and a handful of berries all work well. Cut the fruit thin so it releases flavor quickly, and drop it into the glass before the water.

Try a few easy pairings

  • Cucumber and mint: cool and clean, good on a warm afternoon.
  • Orange and a small piece of fresh ginger: bright with a little warmth.
  • Strawberry and basil: sweet without any added sugar.
  • Grapefruit and rosemary: sharp and fragrant.
  • Apple slices and a cinnamon stick: a good choice for autumn.

Make a jug ahead

If you want stronger flavor, put the fruit in a jug with still water overnight, then top each glass with sparkling water when you pour. The fruit gives up more of its taste with time, and the bubbles stay lively because you add them last.

Serve it properly

It sounds small, but drinking from a nice glass with ice makes a difference. When the drink looks good, you reach for it more often.

Keep two or three favourite combinations in rotation and you will rarely get bored.
