Seasonal Cooking: What to Buy and Cook This Autumn

Autumn is one of the best times of year to cook at home. The markets are full, prices are good and the produce suits slower, warmer meals.

What to look for

  • Squash and pumpkin, for roasting and soups.
  • Apples and pears, for baking or eating fresh.
  • Root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips and beetroot.
  • Cabbage, kale and brussels sprouts.
  • Mushrooms, for quick pan dishes and sauces.

Roast a tray on Sunday

Chop a mix of squash, carrots and red onion, toss with olive oil, salt and a few herbs, and roast until golden. Use them through the week in salads, grain bowls and wraps.

Make one big soup

A large pot of soup made with roasted squash or root vegetables keeps well for several days and freezes easily. Blend it smooth or leave it chunky, and finish with a spoon of yoghurt.

Bake with fruit

Halve apples or pears, fill the centre with oats, a little butter and cinnamon, and bake until soft. It is an easy dessert that feels like more effort than it is.

Shop little and often

Buy what looks best that week rather than following a fixed list. Seasonal produce is at its tastiest for a short time, so enjoy it while it lasts.
