Clearing Clutter in One Weekend: A Room-by-Room Plan

Clearing clutter feels overwhelming when you look at the whole house. Broken into rooms and a clear order, it fits into a single weekend.

Before you start

Get three boxes or bags ready: keep, donate and recycle. Put on music, set a timer for each room and agree that nothing goes back into a cupboard until the whole room is done.

Saturday morning: the entrance

Start where you come and go. Shoes you no longer wear, bags you never use and old post can all go. A clear entrance makes the whole home feel lighter every time you walk in.

Saturday afternoon: the kitchen

Empty one cupboard at a time. Check dates, match lids to containers and give away duplicates. Keep only the tools you used in the last few months.

Sunday morning: the bedroom

Go through clothes by category. If something does not fit or you have not worn it for a year, put it in the donate box. Leave the surfaces next to the bed as empty as you can.

Sunday afternoon: the living room

Gather books, cables, remotes and papers. Give every item a home, and let go of anything that has no place to live.

Keep it clear

Use a simple rule from now on: when something new comes in, something old goes out. Ten minutes of tidying each evening keeps the weekend’s work from slipping away.
