Why a Ten-Minute Walk After Dinner Is Worth Keeping

Some habits ask a lot of you. A short walk after dinner asks for ten minutes and a pair of shoes by the door. That is exactly why it tends to last.

It breaks up the evening

Without a pause, dinner often slides straight into the sofa and a screen. A walk puts a clear line between the day and the evening. You come back feeling as if the evening has started properly.

It is easy to share

A walk is one of the few things a whole household can do together without planning. Children, partners, neighbours and dogs can all come along, and the conversation is usually better side by side than across a table.

You notice your own street

Most of us drive or hurry through the place we live. Walking the same short loop every evening, you start to notice gardens changing with the season, the light at different times of year and the people who live nearby.

How to make it stick

  • Keep it short. Ten minutes is enough; you can always go further.
  • Pick one fixed route so there is nothing to decide.
  • Leave a jacket and shoes ready near the door.
  • On wet days, walk anyway with an umbrella, or do a few laps of the house and call it done.

Try it for two weeks. Most people find that by the end of the second week the walk is the part of the evening they would miss.
